At the heart of the Midlands Meander, just 124km from King Shaka Airport, lies award-winning Howick.

Just 60 kilometres inland of Durban along the N3, the landscape begins to soften into rolling green hills, misty mornings and trout-filled dams. With its cooler climate and countryside charm, the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands feels a world away from the coast… and in 2025, it has even more reason to celebrate.
This year marks 40 years of the Midlands Meander, one of South Africa’s most iconic craft-and-countryside tourism routes. Adding to the milestone is the recent recognition of Howick as the Daily Maverick Small Town of the Year (KZN winner). This is a powerful nod to the people, businesses, community organisations and everyday heroes who have helped drive a remarkable regional revival.
It all began back in 1985 when a small group of local creatives met at Caversham Mill. The idea was to collaborate, open their studios to the public, and shine a little light on the region’s artistry. That spark of collaboration evolved into one of South Africa’s most beloved tourism routes, now spanning roughly 80km and featuring more than 100 studios, eateries, accommodation establishments, wedding venues, and adventure spots.
The 40-year milestone was recently marked at the historic Nottingham Road Hotel, with reflections from founding families, former chairpersons and long-standing contributors. The celebration highlighted how the Meander has remained true to its core values of creativity, community upliftment and environmental care, while evolving into a dynamic, multi-generational destination.
Perfectly positioned 124 kilometres from King Shaka International Airport and sitting in the very centre of the Midlands Meander, Howick’s Small Town of the Year accolade feels especially fitting. The award recognises a collective journey of transformation and collaboration, showing proof that when communities work together, meaningful change is possible.
And as it steps into the future, the Midlands Meander isn’t slowing down. New digital tools and visitor-friendly online platforms are being rolled out to make exploring the route easier than ever. Whether you’re after handcrafted ceramics, a forest zipline, or a plate of slow-cooked Midlands comfort food, or just some time in the countryside, the Midlands continues to deliver!
