Commuters driving along the M7, connecting Pinetown to the N2 and Port of Durban, were in for a nasty shock if they were travelling with unpaid fines on Tuesday, 17 March.

A coordinated road safety blitz saw authorities issue a whopping R368,400 in fines, proving that the city takes road safety seriously.

The operation - led by the eThekwini Transport Authority in collaboration with Metro Police, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, SAPS, the Fire Department, and the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences - targeted one of the city’s busiest freight corridors, frequented by many trucks daily.

Among the highlights (and shockers) of the day: a single freight company was found with R297,000 in unpaid speeding fines. Other motorists were fined for everything from missing licence discs and faulty tyres to ignoring road signs.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate alone handed out R310,500, Metro Police added R34,900, and the Fire Department contributed R23,000 to the total haul.

With the Easter holidays just around the corner, this is a good reminder to make sure you’re not caught out at a roadblock while travelling around this beautiful province.

Check your fines, make sure your licence discs are up to date, and drive safely.

You can check for outstanding traffic fines in South Africa online using platforms like Fines SA, PayCity, or ViewFines by registering with your ID number and vehicle details. These platforms cover multiple municipalities and allow for direct payment and viewing of fine documents.

So, whether you’re commuting to work, running errands, or heading out on an Easter road trip, take a moment to ensure your vehicle is road-ready and your records are in order.

It’s cheaper than paying thousands in fines that could dampen your holiday!
