February in Durban is hot.
But things are about to get even hotter on the paddle calendar as the Dusi Canoe Marathon returns for another three-day test of endurance, skill and sheer determination.
Organisers have confirmed that the 76th edition will take place from 18 to 20 February 2027, bringing three days of paddling, running and gruelling portages between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
And because 2027 is a K1 year, the focus will be firmly on individual paddlers taking on the challenge alone.

It’s you, your boat, and the Dusi
The 2027 race will put the spotlight firmly on individual paddlers, with competitors taking on the three-day journey in single-seater K1 boats.
K2 paddlers can still take on the challenge as a pair, making the race accessible to those who would rather tackle their first Dusi with a partner.
Either way, expect challenging river conditions, demanding portages, unpredictable weather and the camaraderie that makes the Dusi much more than just a race.

Could Andy Birkett make it 17?
There could also be a rather impressive piece of Dusi history in the making in 2027.
Dusi legend Andy Birkett will be chasing a record-extending 17th Dusi title if he takes to the start line.
Birkett is one of the defining names in the race's history, and another appearance would add an intriguing storyline to an already highly anticipated edition.
Of course, the Dusi has never been a race that simply hands out victories. Every year brings a different combination of conditions, meaning even the biggest names have to earn every kilometre.

Why the Dusi remains a South African sporting icon
There’s a reason the Dusi continues to hold such a special place in South African sport; it’s about far more than simply getting from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
It's part canoe race, part endurance challenge, and part adventure, with paddlers navigating rivers and carrying their boats across gruelling sections of land on the way to Durban.
For experienced competitors, it's another opportunity to test themselves against one of the country's most demanding courses.
For newcomers, it's a chance to become part of a sporting tradition that has been going for more than seven decades.
KZN Canoe Club chairman Doug Gow says: "Dusi is an event with a history and character that is almost impossible to replicate. Every year brings a new challenge, and every paddler who takes on the Dusi becomes part of that history. We are excited to confirm the 2027 dates and look forward to building on the success of recent years.
"The Dusi remains the north star of river paddling in South Africa, and we are determined to maintain the race's incredible legacy and work at attracting new paddlers to our iconic event."
