The popular holiday town of Margate on the KZN South Coast suffered a severe flash flood on Sunday (21 December) at around 4.30pm, with reports indicating one casualty. Authorities have, however, moved quickly to respond, with disaster management teams on the ground.

According to a statement issued by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), intense rainfall impacted areas stretching from Margate through Oslo Beach to Port Shepstone. The downpour resulted in widespread damage to infrastructure, including roads, commercial properties and shopping centres, with Shelly Centre among the affected sites.

MEC for COGTA, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, said disaster management teams and fire and rescue services have been fully deployed and remain on high alert. He said their immediate priority is to ensure the safety of all residents and to stabilise the affected areas with urgency.

Roads and Infrastructure Affected

While the situation is under control, motorists are warned that several roads may be hazardous. Fallen trees have obstructed a number of routes, and sinkholes have been reported, particularly in the Manaba area. Emergency teams are actively clearing debris from major arterial roads and conducting formal damage assessments.

Holidaymakers planning to travel within Margate or along the KZN South Coast are advised to factor in possible delays and to avoid areas showing visible signs of damage.

Emergency Teams on High Alert

Provincial and municipal disaster management units, working alongside fire and rescue services, are continuing emergency interventions in affected areas. Teams will remain stationed in the region as weather conditions are closely monitored in coordination with the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

Safety Advice for Visitors

COGTA has urged the public to exercise extreme caution while clean-up operations continue. Visitors and residents are advised to:

  • Avoid crossing flooded bridges or low-lying roads
  • Steer clear of areas where sinkholes have been identified
  • Plan for some travel delays
  • Report any emergencies immediately to local municipal authorities

Stay Informed

While the flooding has caused disruption, authorities stress that the situation is being actively managed. Holidaymakers are encouraged to stay informed through official updates and to follow safety guidance as they enjoy their time on the KZN South Coast.
