Padel is having a major moment right now, and Gateway Theatre of Shopping is bringing all the action straight to Durban.

Padel is having a moment, and Durban is getting in on the action as Gateway Theatre of Shopping hosts its inaugural Grand Padel Open on Friday, 1 May 2026. In partnership with Virgin Active Padel Club and Edgars, this all-day event is set to bring together some of KwaZulu-Natal’s top players alongside social competitors and curious first-timers.
“At the Gateway Club, we’re passionate about creating an inclusive space for new, current and returning players to experience the magic of padel. It’s set to be a vibrant, fun-filled tournament,” says Virgin Active Padel Club KZN Regional Manager, Jade Jacobs.
Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or just keen to try something new, the Grand Padel Open caters to all skill levels. The schedule is packed from morning to evening, with a mix of competitive and social formats:
“We’re extremely excited for the upcoming tournament. The energy is building, the courts are ready, and we’re looking forward to a fantastic day filled with competitive spirit and great matches,” says Gateway Virgin Active Padel Club Manager, Mikhail Pillay.
The Grand Padel Open forms part of a broader mind, body and beauty activation across the centre this weekend! Expect in-store experiences, new product launches and special offers from brands spanning skincare, fitness, fragrance and fashion.
Edgars will showcase its S Active range by Stone Harbour, a new menswear athleisure collection designed for both performance and everyday wear. The range will come to life through an interactive exhibition space, with players including local padel enthusiast Matty Jones sporting the latest looks. Shoppers can browse and buy the collection on-site, along with a curated selection of beauty and active lifestyle products.
Shoppers can also pick up a Wellness Wallet, a free booklet featuring exclusive deals from 20 participating stores. These are available at the gifting concierge desk near Starbucks or the information desk near Circus Circus.
Gateway Marketing Manager Ayesha Sewbaran says the event reflects a shift in how the centre connects with visitors: “The Grand Padel Open is designed to create a space where energy, connection and lifestyle intersect, giving our shoppers new reasons to visit and engage with the centre.”
