Great news for tourism as Durban’s beachfront safety improves

Tourism and government leaders launched the eThekwini Coastal Tourism Policing, which is a real boost for the city’s residents and visitors. 

The initiative provides patrol vehicles, quad bikes, trailers and uniforms to improve visible policing and rapid response capabilities along Durban’s beachfront and tourism hotspots.

This comes at a great time, with Durban making it to the 14th spot of The Best Places to Travel in 2026 by Time Out, cementing its status as South Africa’s coolest coastal city and a top global destination.

A big win for Durban’s beachfront

The new safety initiative is supported through the TOMSA Collaborative Fund, managed by the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) and funded through the tourism levy system. The goal is to create a safer, more welcoming experience for visitors and locals enjoying Durban’s coastline.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Makhotso Sotyu, said tourism safety is central to the sector’s growth: “A safe destination can grow, attract investment, create jobs and welcome visitors with confidence.”

This initiative adds to the ongoing upgrades to the beachfront, with plans announced for a R1-billion world-class amusement park on the former Funworld site in 2027. The broader renewal strategy also includes the transformation of the Elangeni and Maharani hotel precincts - a separate R1-billion upgrade underway through a long-term Southern Sun partnership - as well as the redevelopment of the site, formerly Joe Kool’s.
