The Hilton Arts Festival has long been one of KwaZulu-Natal's cultural highlights for more than three decades, and this year it's adding an exciting new chapter.

From 7 to 9 August, the festival will host the first-ever KZN Art Fair, creating a dedicated platform for artists, designers, galleries, and collectors from across the province and beyond.

For anyone who loves discovering beautiful things, meeting local creatives or simply soaking up a weekend of culture in the Midlands, this is one event worth adding to your calendar.

A first for KwaZulu-Natal

The new fair aims to showcase the province's incredible creative talent while connecting artists with collectors, galleries and new audiences.

"We're excited to bring contemporary art to what is essentially an unexplored frontier of the art market on the east coast of South Africa," says co-founder Lungelo Mkhize. "By doing so, we hope to create a platform that helps this market grow and thrive."

Co-founder Angela Shaw says the timing couldn't be better: “There are already many thriving practitioners, collectives, a dynamic incubator gallery and eager collectors. The KZN Art Fair is the organic result of abundant creative talent and a clear demand for industry growth."

An immersive art experience for everyone

Rather than simply hanging artwork on walls, the KZN Art Fair promises an immersive creative experience.

Visitors can:

  • Browse gallery exhibitions featuring established and emerging artists
  • Explore contemporary craft and design
  • Attend panel discussions
  • Join exhibition walkabouts
  • Watch live demonstrations
  • Participate in workshops

The fair takes over Hilton College's Memorial Hall and surrounding spaces, transforming the campus into a creative hub for the weekend.

One of the standout attractions is Making Ground, a specially curated exhibition celebrating KwaZulu-Natal's designers, makers, and craftspeople.

Sponsored by Pietermaritzburg-based manufacturer Belgotex, the exhibition highlights everything from ceramics and textiles to basketry, weaving and contemporary industrial design.

The fair isn't just for collectors and artists. A dedicated Creative Futures programme introduces high school and tertiary students to careers in the visual arts through curator-led tours, practical workshops, and conversations with working artists and industry professionals.

Perfectly at home in the Midlands

Hosting the event as part of the Hilton Arts Festival makes perfect sense.

Already attracting more than 25 000 visitors annually, the festival has built a reputation as one of South Africa's premier arts events.

Add in the Midlands Meander, nearby Ardmore Ceramic Studios, the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, and the UNESCO-recognised creative heritage of the region, and you've got the ideal backdrop for an art fair celebrating KZN's creative identity.
