The misty town of Hilton will be the backdrop of an epic rugby clash as two of the country’s oldest school rivalries – Hilton College and Michaelhouse – once again face each other on Gilfillan Field this Saturday, 2 May 2026.

This is one of the oldest schoolboy matchups, dating all the way back to 1904 when Hilton won the first contest 6-0. It’s been quite an even pairing the past century (and some change), and the first team match is always a highlight on what is generally a weekend of KZN Midlands celebrations.

A Midlands weekend worth the drive

Derby Day isn’t just a rugby fixture, it’s a full-scale KZN Midlands gathering that draws thousands of spectators from across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond. Families, old boys, and sports fans descend on the campus for a day that celebrates tradition, school spirit, and a deeply South African love of rugby!

This year, the weekend kicks off early with a meaningful addition to the line-up. On Friday, 1 May, Old Hiltonian Glen du Preez, co-founder of The Platform Gallery, is hosting the 4th Art for Conservation Auction at Netherwood Farm. In partnership with The Boucher Legacy, the event brings together art and environmental impact by giving visitors a chance to invest in conservation while soaking up the creative energy of the KZN Midlands.

What you need to know

If you’re heading through for Derby Day, a bit of planning goes a long way:

Tickets & Access

All tickets - including parking and gazebo spots - must be booked in advance via Webtickets or at Pick n Pay outlets. A valid vehicle sticker is essential for entry, fetched at the Avenues Centre in Hilton (between 12pm and 6pm on Friday 1 May | Between 6am and 2pm on Saturday 2 May).

Parking & Transport

Parking will be positioned slightly further from the main field this year to ease congestion, with a designated drop-and-go zone available. No roadside parking is permitted outside the school.

Seating & Viewing

Extra grandstands will be in place around Gilfillan Field, but it’s a ‘cushions-only zone with no chairs or blankets allowed in this area. Elsewhere on campus, picnic setups are encouraged, giving the day a relaxed, family-friendly feel.

Gazebos & Picnics

Gazebos are limited and must be pre-booked, with designated space on Lombard Field. Visitors are welcome to bring light picnic provisions, but external catering, generators, and gas equipment are not permitted.

Food & Vibe

There’ll be plenty to keep you fuelled, from on-site vendors to the ever-popular Fleur-de-Lys Club, ensuring you won’t go hungry between matches.

Don’t miss the real GOAT(s)

This year, Hilton College has welcomed a seriously cute and furry black-and-white mascot to the campus – little Billy the goat. The 2026 Head Boy, having studied his school archives carefully, uncovered the interesting fact that he’s entitled to keep his livestock on campus. Bringing this tradition back to life, Billy was introduced in the first term, quickly followed by his mate, Gilly (named for Gilfillan Field, of course!).

Don’t miss the chance to say hi to these two happy campus residents on the day and take advantage of the long weekend to experience all the KZN Midlands has to offer!
