If you grew up living or holidaying in Durban, chances are you have at least one childhood memory of relaxing under those shady trees and meeting the characters at Mitchell Park Zoo.

And now, after months of essential repairs, this beloved city landmark is officially open and ready to welcome visitors again!

Closed earlier this year due to flood damage and overdue maintenance, the zoo has undergone a thoughtful restoration that brings new life to this more-than-100-year-old treasure.

As a result of a partnership between eThekwini Municipality, the Mitchell Park Trust, and generous local organisations like the Woodford Group and On the Verge, the park has been restored to the safe, family-friendly destination Durban knows and loves.

What’s new at Mitchell Park Zoo?

  • Refreshed playgrounds with safe new equipment
  • Upgraded fencing and pathways
  • Restored picnic lawns and braai spaces
  • Better accessibility, including wheelchair-friendly routes
  • Upgraded zoo enclosures and improved visitor flow

The animals remained onsite throughout the revamp and were carefully relocated as needed, thanks to the dedicated team of keepers who care for them every single day.

Getting wild at Mitchell Park Zoo

Mitchell Park is still home to an impressive line-up of creatures:

  • 328 birds from 70 species
  • 75 mammals, including monkeys, buck and raccoons
  • 45 reptiles, including crocodiles
  • 253 fish and other aquatic species
  • And, of course… the local legends: the tortoises

Meet Durban’s most famous tortoise

No visit is complete without greeting Admiral, Durban’s most iconic tortoise and one of South Africa’s oldest citizens.

At 121 years old, he’s practically a celebrity!

His story is legendary: in 1915, a naval officer dropped off Admiral (aged around 11 years at the time) before leaving for World War I… and never returned.

Over a century later, Admiral weighs close to 300 kilos and is happily enjoying his lush home at Mitchell Park Zoo.
