No matter whether you're an avid reader or prefer to consume your content via podcasts or TV, I think we can all agree that the closure of libraries is never a good sign.

These are not just home to books that you can read for free (a concept that will never cease to delight me), but also provide a sanctuary for research, (quiet) discussions, and community gatherings.

Added to this, Durban became the continent’s first-ever UNESCO City of Literature in 2018, in honour of the city’s literary festivals and great library programmes.

That's why the (albeit temporary) closure of Musgrave and Windermere libraries has caused much alarm.

So, what's going on?

eThekwini Municipality has clarified the circumstances surrounding the closures, following concerns raised in a circulating video.

According to the municipality, property owners have experienced challenges in complying with the City's Supply Chain Management requirements. This non-compliance has affected services at the two facilities, necessitating their temporary closure.

The municipality has acknowledged the inconvenience this may cause library users, but emphasised the closures are temporary, and it remains committed to ensuring residents can still access library and information services.

The municipality will also continue exploring appropriate measures to minimise disruptions to service delivery while this is being addressed.

Where can I go to get my reading fix?

The good news is that Musgrave and Windermere aren't your only options.

The municipality says residents can make use of other public libraries within the eThekwini municipal area, including:

  • Umbilo Library
  • City Hall Library
  • Dr AB Xuma Street Library
  • Beach Library at OR Tambo Parade

There are also numerous other libraries across the municipality, so you don't necessarily have to put your reading habit on hold while the two branches are closed. Although certainly not as convenient, this will at least you keep you going until they reopen.

What if you can't get to a library?

The municipality also provides Housebound Library Services for people who can't access libraries because of their circumstances. The service supports elderly and frail community members, as well as institutions such as frail-care centres and orphanages.

So, while you may have to travel a little further for your next library visit, there are still options available.

The story won’t end here

We will be keeping a close eye on developments and let you know as soon as these libraries reopen.

For now, the best thing you can do is head to your local library and - if you haven't already - get a library card and take out a book.

The more we use these hallowed spaces, the more likely they are to get more funding and remain open for generations to discover the joy of reading.
