Airport queues, boarding passes, and paperwork may soon be a thing of the past as the travel industry evolves.

The stress of arriving at the airport only to remember your passport is in your bedside table at home is almost over. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), you could soon only head to the airport with nothing but your phone…well and your clothes, of course. No passport, no boarding pass, no paperwork.
In a series of international Proofs of Concept (PoCs), airlines, airports, and governments tested how digital identities stored on smartphones could replace traditional travel documents. These global trials have shown that contactless, biometric-enabled travel is working well in real-world conditions.

Passengers in the trials were even able to complete parts of their journey before leaving home, with identity checks done in advance.
These systems worked across multiple countries, airlines, and digital platforms. Travellers used a mix of global and national digital wallets — including Apple Wallet and Google Wallet IDs, as well as country-specific systems.
While the tech is ready, the key step that remains is still with governments. IATA says countries now need to roll out Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs) - secure, digital versions of passports - and ensure systems can recognise and accept them across borders.
For now, you’ll still need your passport when flying out of Durban. But behind the scenes, the travel industry is moving fast toward a future where your identity lives on your phone and airport queues become a thing of the past.
