South African motorists are getting some welcome relief at the pumps from today (Wednesday, 1 July), with petrol prices dropping by around R2 per litre. The timing is just right, with school holiday travel season now in full swing.

After months of fluctuating fuel costs, the latest adjustment means a little extra spending money for beach days, festival tickets, and scenic road trips across KwaZulu-Natal.

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources confirmed the price cuts after global oil prices eased during June, helped by lower crude oil prices and a stronger rand. Although the reintroduction of the remainder of the fuel levy has impacted what could have been an even bigger decrease, we’re still set to benefit from one of the year's most significant fuel price drops.

What you will pay at the pumps

From Wednesday, 1 July 2026, motorists can expect:

  • Petrol 93: Down R2.01/litre
  • Petrol 95: Down R1.96/litre
  • Diesel (0.05%): Down R3.14/litre
  • Diesel (0.005%): Down R3.59/litre

At the coast, 95 Unleaded will now cost R25.23 per litre, making those longer holiday drives a little easier on the wallet.

Now to plan that winter road trip

There’s no excuse not to get out and about in KZN. Here’s how you can fuel savings to good use:

  • The glamorous Hollywoodbets Durban July returns on 4 July, bringing fashion, horse racing and entertainment to the city in one of South Africa's most iconic sporting and social events.
  • The Ballito Pro Presented by O'Neill transforms the KZN North Coast into a festival of surfing, music and beach culture from 4 to 18 July.
  • Winter also signals the arrival of the annual Sardine Run along the KZN South Coast, where dolphins, sharks, whales and seabirds create one of the world's most extraordinary marine events.
  • The Ashburton Aloe Festival on 4 July offers family-friendly entertainment, local produce and plenty of KZN charm.
  • Classic car enthusiasts can rev up for the Shongweni Motor Show from 31 July to 2 August, showcasing everything from vintage classics to modern performance machines.

This is also the time of year to watch the weather, with the chance of snowfall ever-present in the Drakensberg region!

Pack the snacks and get that road-trip playlist ready, because travelling KZN ju

st became a little more affordable.
