If you’re planning to drive in or around KwaZulu-Natal today, take note of a severe weather warning that’s been issued by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA). According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), a cut-off low-pressure system is sweeping across the province, bringing heavy rain, severe thunderstorms, and even the possibility of snowfall in some areas.

What’s happening?

Disaster management teams have been placed on high alert across the province, with authorities monitoring conditions closely and preparing for rapid response where needed. If you’re in KZN today, you can expect intense downpours, strong winds, and thunderstorms that could lead to:

  • Localised flooding of roads and low-lying areas
  • Dangerous driving conditions and reduced visibility
  • Possible damage to infrastructure, including bridges
  • Travel delays or route closures

If you’re driving today…

This is not the day for unnecessary road trips. If you do need to travel, take extra precautions:

  • Avoid flooded roads and low-water bridges, even if the water looks shallow
  • Drive slower than usual and increase following distance
  • Keep headlights on for visibility
  • Plan your route in advance and check for updates
  • Delay travel if conditions worsen

Provincial authorities, led by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, say winter readiness plans are in place, but public cooperation is key.

If you can stay off the roads today, do it. If not, stay alert, stay informed, and don’t take risks.
