The country has rallied to replace WO Karl Sander’s stolen coffee machine, raising R500k+ in 3 days.

Sometimes a story captures the public imagination in the most unexpected way.
What started as a missing coffee machine has turned into one of the most heartwarming stories to emerge from Durban this year, with South Africans rallying behind Hawks investigator Warrant Officer Karl Sander and helping raise more than R500,000 through an online crowdfunding campaign.
Sander, a senior narcotics investigator with the KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), made headlines during testimony before the Madlanga Commission this week when he revealed that after his coffee machine disappeared from a police facility, he was accused of stealing it and subjected to a polygraph test.
Sander was not only exonerated through the polygraph, but his testimony struck a chord with the country when they learned the value of a simple cup of coffee for those in such demanding careers.
The testimony prompted Durban-based paramedic and emergency services personality Kyle van Reenen to launch a crowdfunding campaign with a goal of raising R5 000 to replace the stolen machine.
What happened next surprised everyone.
The campaign quickly gained momentum, attracting donations from people across South Africa and pushing the total beyond R500,000 in just three days.
Sander’s integrity has become a beacon of hope for many South Africans. As one contributor commented:
“Thank you for being South Africa's HERO, we needed one. Sorry for everything you had to endure to become our HERO, you name will go down in history for future generations to know how heroic you are. May GOD protect you. Thank you for your service, please don't leave us, please stay on and make SAPS a better place.”
According to Van Reenen, the public response reflects something far bigger than the value of an appliance:
"I've worked as a paramedic and in various roles within the private security and emergency services sectors throughout my career. Having worked side by side with members of the South African Police Service, emergency services personnel, and other first responders, I know exactly what those on the front line go through every day. People see a coffee machine. Those of us who have lived that life see something very different."
Van Reenen explained that for many first responders, that cup of coffee often comes after some of the most difficult moments imaginable.
"We know what that cup of coffee means after a difficult call. We know what it means after a fatal accident, a violent incident, a long shift, or a night spent away from our families. It is often one of the few moments where you get to pause, collect your thoughts, debrief with your colleagues, and prepare yourself for the next call. To most people, it's just a cup of coffee. To those who have served on the front line, it's much more than that."
With donations continuing to pour in, no final decision has yet been made on how the funds will ultimately be used.
Van Reenen says he has remained in close contact with Sander throughout the campaign and that discussions will take place once the fundraising drive concludes.
"Once the campaign has concluded and Warrant Officer Sander has had an opportunity to take stock of the support he has received, we will sit down over a well-deserved cup of coffee and discuss how he would like the funds to be utilised."
Any decisions will need to comply with South African Police Service regulations regarding donations and gifts, something Van Reenen believes Sander will approach with the same integrity that has defined his career.
While the target has been reached – and then some! – the money will ultimately go towards a good cause. You can track, check out the heartwarming comments, or show your support on BackaBuddy.
