Ever had a beer with a view at 2,874 metres above sea level?

This is the year to try new things, to go on adventures, and to start ticking off those bucket-list items…starting with a drink at the highest pub in Africa - The Sani Mountain Lodge. If you’re going to enjoy a beer with a view, why not do it at 2,874 metres above sea level?
Sitting on top of the legendary Sani Pass, just inside the Lesotho border next to KwaZulu-Natal, the pub forms part of Sani Mountain Escape: a mountain hideaway that’s been enchanting travellers for more than 50 years. The site itself dates back to the early 1900s, when it served as a humble trading post for those brave enough to cross the pass. In 1963, David Alexander officially opened the pub, creating one of Southern Africa’s most iconic experiences.
Today, it’s a rite of passage for hikers, bikers, road-trippers, and adventure-seekers looking to soar to new heights! Expect crackling fires, rustic charm, warm hospitality and the most incredible views. In summer, you can enjoy crisp, never-ending mountain views. In winter, a blanket of thick snow attracts many excited snow seekers!
The Sani Pass is one of Southern Africa’s most iconic mountain routes that winds through the Drakensberg Mountains, connecting South Africa with Lesotho.
The pass climbs to an altitude of 2,876 metres above sea level, and is known for its hairpin bends, steep gradients, and breathtaking views!
But the highest pub in Africa is just the beginning. Make a proper adventure of it and tick off a few of these while you’re there:
Don’t wallow at sea level this summer, take things to new heights for an unforgettable KZN-adjacent experience.
