The sweetest, nuttiest festival in town.

If you’ve ever driven through the farmlands of KwaZulu-Natal, you’ll definitely have seen the sweeping waves of sugarcane interspersed with macadamia trees of all sizes.
This combination of delicious produce will be celebrated and supported at the Sugar Mac Festival, taking place on 8 and 9 July in Mtunzini in northern KZN.
Hosted on Mtunzini Sports Grounds, the festival combines farming, innovation, business, and family-friendly fun in one very grounded celebration of the region’s agricultural strength.
At its core, Sugar Mac is a meeting point for two of KZN’s most important agricultural industries: sugarcane and macadamias.
For the serious farmers among you, expect a full showcase of farming equipment and services:
It’s part expo, part networking hub, part country fair… and it’s certainly not all about machinery and trade deals.
There’s also a strong community and lifestyle element, with live music from Winston Smile and Blarney & Son, a variety of food stalls, and a dedicated kids’ zone that makes it a full day out for families.
For decades, KZN had been a sugar powerhouse, but shifting demand has seen the region rapidly expanding into the macadamia sector, which is now one of the country’s most valuable agricultural export sectors.
Macadamia farming is not a quick-win crop. Trees can take up to 10 to 12 years to reach full production, requiring patience, long-term planning, and serious investment in irrigation, pest control, and soil management.
But once mature, they produce one of the world’s most in-demand luxury nuts.
South Africa is now one of the leading global exporters, with much of the production heading to Asia and Europe.
Within that landscape, KZN plays an increasingly important role thanks to its subtropical climate and coastal growing conditions.
From the orchards to the expo floor, Sugar Mac is a celebration of KZN’s agricultural industry and a great excuse to head to northern KZN for festival fun and game viewing in the region.
