Top riders from across the country and the globe are heading to the Northern Drakensberg for one of the toughest motorbike races.

Forget smooth racetracks and perfect corners. This week, the Northern Drakensberg becomes the setting for one of the toughest motorsport events on the planet as the 2026 IMPI Hard Enduro gets underway from 2 to 4 July.
Considered the biggest Hard Enduro event in the world, the three-day challenge will see more than 1,200 riders - including 30 international competitors and South Africa's top off-road stars - battle 292 kilometres of unforgiving terrain in the northern Berg.
This is a race where simply reaching the finish line is an achievement!
With temperatures expected to tumble across KwaZulu-Natal this weekend, riders could be facing an even tougher test as rain, mud and slippery rocks add another layer of difficulty.
Think of it as the ultimate obstacle course on two wheels.
Unlike motocross or traditional enduro racing, Hard Enduro isn't about outright speed. Instead, riders must conquer some of the harshest natural terrain, navigating towering rock faces, endless boulder fields, steep mountain climbs, deep river crossings, fallen trees and muddy ravines.
There's no pit crew waiting around the corner either. Riders carry their own tools, repair their own bikes on the trail and rely on endurance, skill and sheer determination to survive stages that can last for hours.
Race Director, Craig van Heerden, says another important aspect is the GPS navigation: “While the participants are riding, they have to navigate the tough terrain with a GPS attached to their handlebars. We don’t use any markers because we try to protect the Drakensberg as much as possible; rather, we use natural footpaths that animals have created over years.”
It's often described as one of the most physically demanding motorsport disciplines in the world.
The rugged Northern Drakensberg is almost purpose-built for Hard Enduro.
Towering mountains, rocky riverbeds, technical climbs, and remote valleys provide the perfect natural playground, while the spectacular scenery ensures spectators have an unforgettable day out.
Several spectator points along the race route will give fans the chance to watch riders tackle the event's most challenging obstacles up close.
Whether you're a die-hard motorsport fan or simply looking for an excuse to explore one of KZN’s most spectacular regions, the IMPI Hard Enduro promises an adrenaline-fuelled weekend.
