Anywhere you go in KZN, you’re going to make incredible holiday memories. But you also need to ensure you leave it the same, if not better, for the next visitors!

Basically, leave behind good vibes, not future problems. Fortunately, you don't need to overhaul your holiday plans to reduce your environmental impact.

Onwaba Gonyora, Director at Brahman Hills in the KZN Midlands, explains: "Sustainable holidaymaking doesn't have to be complicated, expensive or perfect. It can start with a few simple, eco-conscious choices, and a family holiday is a practical way to teach children that caring for nature isn't a separate act. It's something we can build into everyday habits, from how we use water to how we leave a place behind."

Here are 6 simple ways to travel a little greener on your next adventure.

1.    Make the journey part of the holiday

If your holiday destination is within driving distance, consider swapping a flight for a road trip. Not only can it reduce your travel footprint, but it also gives you the chance to discover those interesting KZN towns and roadside gems you might otherwise miss.

2.    Choose accommodation with purpose

More hotels and lodges are embracing sustainable practices than ever before. Look for places that conserve water, recycle, generate renewable energy, or actively protect local biodiversity. Supporting businesses investing in greener tourism helps encourage positive change across the industry.

3.    Reuse your towels

That little sign in your hotel bathroom actually makes a difference. Hanging up your towel instead of leaving it on the floor saves thousands of litres of water, as well as the electricity and detergent used for unnecessary washing.

4.    Treat water like the precious resource it is

Holiday mode doesn't have to mean endless showers. Shortening your shower by just a few minutes, turning taps off properly, and avoiding unnecessary water use all help reduce your environmental footprint.

5.    Switch off before heading out

Before leaving your room for the day, turn off lights, heaters, air conditioning, and unnecessary appliances. In cooler destinations like the KZN Midlands or Drakensberg, remember to switch off electric blankets once your bed has warmed up.

6.    Leave only footprints

One of the simplest travel rules is still the best: leave nature exactly as you found it. Resist picking flowers, feeding wildlife, or collecting souvenirs from natural spaces. Instead, encourage children to take photographs and appreciate the environment without disturbing it.

As Gonyora explains: "The real legacy is not only the memories we make on holiday, but the world we leave behind. If we want future generations to enjoy these same landscapes and experiences, we need to start with the choices we make today."

If every traveller makes a few small changes, the impact can be enormous!
