A warning has been issued about potentially dangerous weather in Durban today (Friday, September 4), with eThekwini Municipality’s emergency teams on high alert, as strong winds and damaging waves are forecast across KwaZulu-Natal.
The warning comes as a cut-off low-pressure system moves eastwards across the country, bringing unsettled conditions, including rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for damaging winds across most of KwaZulu-Natal, while a separate warning is in place for damaging waves along the KZN coast.

Winds could reach 90km/h
According to eThekwini Municipality, winds across the city are expected to average between 30 and 40km/h, with gusts of up to 90km/h along the coast and inland areas.
The strong winds could bring down trees, damage infrastructure and temporary structures, disrupt travel and coastal activities, and send debris flying.
Motorists are urged to take particular care on exposed and elevated roads, where crosswinds could affect vehicle stability. High-sided vehicles are especially vulnerable in strong crosswinds.
Stay away from the coast
Durban's coastline is also expected to experience hazardous conditions, with SAWS warning of damaging waves along the KZN coast.
Beachgoers, anglers, boaters, and other ocean users are advised to stay away from the water and coastal areas while the warning remains in place.
Boat owners should move vessels to safe shelter. The combination of strong winds and rough seas could also disrupt small harbours and coastal activities.
What Durban residents need to know
eThekwini Disaster Management, Fire and Rescue, and Metro Police teams are on standby to respond to weather-related incidents.
Residents are advised to:
- Secure loose objects, outdoor furniture and temporary structures.
- Avoid unnecessary travel during the worst conditions.
- Stay away from trees and overhead power lines.
- Take care when driving on exposed routes and bridges.
- Avoid beaches, rocks, piers and harbour areas.
- Keep away from any fallen electrical cables.
- Seek shelter if conditions deteriorate.
The municipality will continue monitoring vulnerable areas, including coastal precincts and informal settlements.
The wider weather system is expected to bring further unsettled conditions to parts of KwaZulu-Natal, with rain and thunderstorms also expected as the cut-off low moves eastwards.
