Durban motorists, consider this your Sunday morning heads-up: several roads across the city will be closed or have lane restrictions on 6 September as cyclists take to the streets for the Iqwembu Cycle Challenge.
The Durban Metro Police Service is advising motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time, use alternative routes where possible and allow extra time for travel as the race gets underway.

Which Durban roads will be affected?
The following closures and lane restrictions are expected:
- Ruth First Highway northbound at Sandile Thusi Road: Road closed. No northbound traffic will be allowed on Ruth First Highway.
- Ruth First Highway northbound at Isaiah Ntshangase Road: Road closed. Traffic will not be allowed towards Isaiah Ntshangase Road.
- Isaiah Ntshangase Road – Country Club exit: Road closed towards Ruth First Highway. Traffic will be diverted west along Isaiah Ntshangase Road.
- Athlone Drive at the Ruth First Highway northbound on-ramp: Road closed. No traffic will be allowed northbound onto Ruth First Highway.
- Sandile Thusi Road eastbound between Masabalala Yengwa Avenue and Ruth First Highway: The left lane will be closed to accommodate cyclists.
- Masabalala Yengwa Avenue southbound between Isaiah Ntshangase Road and Sandile Thusi Road: Left lanes will be closed for cyclists.
- Stalwart Simelane Street northbound before Ruth First Highway: Lanes will be reduced.

Motorists urged to take care
Durban Metro Police officers will be deployed along the affected routes to manage traffic and help keep both cyclists and motorists safe. Drivers must follow traffic officers' instructions, obey temporary road signs, and exercise extra caution around cyclists.
Earlier this week, the South African Weather Service also issued a warning about a cut-off low bringing thunderstorms and strong winds to the region. Motorists should also be prepared for wet conditions this weekend and plan routes accordingly.
