While the rest of South Africa is layering up and scraping ice off windscreens, Durban is doing what Durban does best in winter: getting out and enjoying this epic city.

Because we all know, winter is when Durban truly comes alive!

With school holidays starting this week, the province is expecting one of its biggest winter tourism seasons yet.

According to the latest Winter 2026 Tourism Forecast, more than 920,000 visitors are expected to travel to KwaZulu-Natal between 26 June and 20 July, generating close to R1.9 billion in tourism spend.

"The projected increase in visitor numbers and tourism spend is a strong indication that KwaZulu-Natal remains one of South Africa's most attractive destinations," said KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Rev. Musa Zondi.

Things to do in Durban this winter

Durban fun in the sun

Durban always promises sunshine, surf and some of the city’s biggest events in winter.

While temperatures plunge elsewhere, Durban continues to serve up blue skies and beach days. The Indian Ocean remains warm enough for swimming, while winter swells make this one of the best times of year for surfing.

The city is also turning up the energy with major events like The Hollywoodbets Durban July on 4 July and The East Coast Radio House + Garden Show from 27 June to 5 July.

Throw in beachfront walks, rooftop cocktails and ocean-view brunches, and you've got the perfect winter city break.

Marine life spectacle down south

Head to the KZN South Coast for ‘The Greatest Shoal on Earth’!  If you've never experienced the Sardine Run, now's the time.

Every winter, millions of sardines move up the coastline, creating one of the greatest marine spectacles on Earth. Dolphins, sharks, whales and thousands of seabirds join the feast, making it a bucket-list experience for nature lovers.

This is also prime whale-watching season along the KZN South Coast as these massive mammals migrate north.

For something a little more laidback, the KZN South Coast is your spot.

World-class surfing north-side

Nothing says winter in KZN quite like the Ballito Pro Presented by O'Neill.

Running from 4 to 18 July, the event brings world-class surfing, live entertainment, beachside vibes and plenty of action to Willard Beach.

Even if you don't know your cutbacks from your carves, there are tons of festival fun to make it well worth the trip.

Cosy fires and countryside escapes

If Durban's winter starts feeling a little too warm, head inland.

The KZN Midlands and Drakensberg are ideal for that more ‘traditional’ winter experience with crisp mornings, crackling fireplaces, and plenty of opportunities to slow down and embrace the season. Here you can enjoy country cafés, craft breweries, farm stalls, scenic hikes, and evenings beside a roaring fire.

The region's winter events calendar is packed with wholesome and exciting activities, including the Karkloof Polo Classic, which returns to the Karkloof Polo Club from 26 to 28 June, as well as the Ashburton Aloe Festival on 4 and 5 July.

Safari spectacles and farming fun in Zululand

Winter is safari season in northern KZN.

The bush is thinner, the weather is mild, and animals are easier to spot as they gather around water sources. Whether you're heading to a Big Five reserve or a private game lodge, your chances of memorable wildlife sightings are about as good as they get.

For something a little different, head north for the Sugar Mac Festival on 8 and 9 July. This much-loved community event combines live entertainment, local food, family fun and plenty of small-town charm in one of KZN's prettiest coastal villages.
