Japanese Gardens, Durban North

Need a quieter afternoon? The Japanese Gardens offer a welcome change of pace. Wander along the pathways, enjoy the greenery, and permit yourself to do absolutely nothing for a while. Sometimes that's exactly what a public holiday calls for.

Where: Prospect Hall Road, Durban North

The Barn Owl, Florida Road

After standing in a voting queue, you probably just need a really good cup of coffee. Head to The Barn Owl at Florida Fields, order your favourite brew, and settle into the courtyard. It's an easy stop if you're not in the mood for a big outing.

uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve

Where: Northern end of Lagoon Drive, uMhlanga

Tyler's, Umdloti

Made your mark and worked up an appetite? Let someone else handle lunch. Tyler's at Marine Walk is a good choice for a leisurely meal, with steaks, burgers, and wood-fired pizzas on the menu. Gather a few friends or bring the family and make an afternoon of it.

Where: Marine Walk Shopping Centre, Salta Sibaya, Umdloti

A little reminder: Vote first, relax afterwards. And since it's a public holiday, check with individual venues for any changes to their trading hours before heading out.
