Trying to keep your teenagers’ screentime down to an acceptable level while making sure they remain happy and engaged on holiday can be exhausting. When you need a place full of inspiring outdoors activities that offer bigger dopamine hits than a Fortnite marathon, head for Moliets-et-Maa, a couple of hours’ drive north of the better-known Biarritz. Here you’ll find fantastic beaches and stunning forests, the perfect spot for your teens to lose themselves in surfing and cycling. And there’s no better family base for the break than Villas La Clairière aux Chevreuils, run by Summer France, which has eight villa and holiday apartment complexes in Moliets.
They’re a home away from home – presuming your home is built around a delightfully sunsoaked private pool and terrace, of course – with between three and five bedrooms. Located an easy, two-kilometre bike ride from the centre of Moliets and its main beaches, this is a tranquil and attractive place to charge up your batteries before getting out into nature. Should a pooch be part of your family you can bring them along as the villas are dog friendly.
Clean and simple, with both double and twin options in the larger villas, where three of five of the rooms are ensuite. In each case the main part of the house has plenty of space for entertaining with a large living area that’s perfect for hanging out with family and friends.
There are some great restaurant options if you don’t fancy cooking. Café de la Plage, right on the beach, is a laidback spot offering fresh seasonal food from the region, with daily moules and grilled fish dishes chalked up on a blackboard and a great line in tapas, not to mention killer crêpes for dessert. For something more sophisticated in the evening, there’s the ever-popular Un Singe en Hiver on Place de la Bastide. You will need to make a reservation to snag a seat on their open terrace, but it’s worth the effort for the note-perfect confit de canard and the delicious tartare de thon, not to mention the potent house cocktails. However if your teens are fed up with elegant French cuisine and are hankering for a burger or a pizza, head to Billy’s, just off Avenue de L’Ocean. Here even the most ravenous 15-year-old will meet their match in the Smash Bacon, a towering edifice of a burger surrounded by an ocean of fries.
We booked through Summer France and everyone we spoke to was really knowledgeable and always quick to respond to any questions or requests we had.
The area is what really sells this destination for families. The cycling, along wonderful trails through the forest, is exceptional, with La Vélodyssée, the country’s 1,300 kilometre-long bike route that heads from Brittany all the way to the Basque Country, passing right through Moliets. Kitting your kids out with bikes is easy – get in touch with Vélos du Golf, who can deliver bikes to your accommodation and also provide trailers and safety gear if required.
Another terrific option for teens is Adrénaline Parc, which offers Go Ape-style treetop adventure courses, quad biking, mini-motorbiking and paintballing. Truly committed parents can take on the death-defying ‘catapault’ ride with their kids, which twangs you into the sky at great speed on bungee ropes. It’s a near-guaranteed treatment for chronic teenage grumpyface, as is a trip down La Palue river on a vessel hired from nearby Canoë Land in Saint-Michel-Escalus.
The real stand-out in this area, however, is the surfing. The beaches surrounding Moliets are stunning and at the Ecole de Surf du Golf, the knowledgeable surf instructor will run you through the basics before getting you out in the water. The waves are the perfect size, giving you enough thrust to get plenty of exhilaration without any intimidation.
Because it’s a place where you instantly feel relaxed, you’ll be surrounded by nature on all sides and you’ll never run short of exciting activities.
