Steaming pots, scales from the '70s and friendly service. A few kilometres out of Girona, at the Hostal Nou de Llorà (Cal ganso), you'll enjoy a nostalgic trip to the ambience of a classic Catalan bar-restaurant. If you're looking for a strong start to the day, make sure you try one of their proper breakfasts ('esmorzar de forquilla i ganivet'); they use a vegetable charcoal grill, the type you don't often see these days, to cook their ingredients. It's also a good place to stop for a beer, pre-lunch vermouth or post-prandial coffee sitting either inside or on the outdoor terrace. And for a truly local experience, don't forget to order a 'ratafia' (local liquor made with herbs) with ice - it's home-made and delicious!
