Wickwood Inn

On a recent visit to the Wickwood Inn around Christmas, I felt like I'd stepped into a Hallmark Channel movie—except this version had much better design, considerably better art and some very tangible amenities. With a prime location on Saugatuck’s main street, this historic boutique hotel has the warm, lived-in feeling of a beloved old house. There are fireplaces, oil paintings, antiques and surprising little bits of character around every corner.

The recent renovation of the hotel by Soucie Horner Design Collective is a knockout. Rather than erase the hotel's history, the design team embraced it, creating rooms that feel individual, curated and genuinely personal. It's the kind of place where you want to sit down and stay a while, preferably with a glass of wine in hand.

What are the rooms like at the Wickwood Inn?

The rooms at the Wickwood Inn are each unique. Each suite has its own personality, with beautiful furnishings and historic details. After getting a tour of almost every room during our stay, I can say with some confidence that, if money is no object, you should spring for Suite No. 5. It has gorgeous wood paneling, a fireplace and an in-suite tub. Whatever room you end up in, you’ll be able to enjoy one of the hotel’s biggest luxuries: a Vispring mattress. This was, hands down, one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept on. 

What are the food options like at the Wickwood Inn?

The food and drink offerings at the Wickwood Inn, developed by Chef Rose Duong, were all exceptional. Every afternoon, the inn hosts a wine and cheese hour where you can meet fellow guests in the charming library as the fireplace crackles nearby. The farm-to-breakfast meals were also a highlight, with fresh fruit and delicious eggs. Along with the nightly fresh-baked goods and sweets, it felt like there was always a reason to wander back to the common areas for a quick bite or relaxing read.

What is the location like around the Wickwood Inn?

One of Wickwood's biggest advantages is that you are literally downtown Saugatuck. The hotel is within walking distance of the town's galleries, restaurants, bars and independent boutiques. Make time to check out local dining standouts like Lady Bird and Bodie’s Chophouse, along with Saugatuck's many galleries and boutiques. The small vacation town has long had a strong arts presence, and that makes Wickwood's extensive collection of artwork feel particularly appropriate. With the Ox-Bow School of Art nearby, there's a natural connection between the hotel’s interiors and the artistic spirit of the area. I could have happily stayed at this inn for weeks—and I'm still thinking about that mattress.
