Our program, "Butterfly Dreams and Water Shadows" opens with 3 choral works by contemporary choral superstar, Eric Whitacre. Among them is "Water Night" which we pair with "Water Shadows", a work for solo saxophone by Japanese composer Akira Nishimura. Our guest saxophonist, Reese Burgan also teams up with guest soprano, Lisa Borik to perform excerpts of Lori Laitman's "I never saw another butterfly" featuring poetry written by children killed during the holocaust. These movements are interwoven with excerpts from the late British composer John Tavener's "Butterfly Dreams," which according to the composer is a sacred work. The texts come from a variety of sources including ChuangTse and an Acoman Indian. We close the concert with the extended work, "Stabat Mater" by young British composer, Paul Mealor who is best known for his setting of "Ubi Caritas" performed for the royal wedding of HRH Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
