Ak’chamel - World Psychedelia

They produce a bizarre mix of “World Music” and performance art incorporating musical styles from Thailand (Molam), Western China (throat singing), North African street music, South American cumbia and more. These influences coalesce into a psychedelic ritual of sights and sounds with the spontaneity and unpredictability you might find while actually being in a far away land.

Thuy-Linh Cornett: Jazz and Vietnamese Poetry

Thuy is a Vietnamese American greatly influenced by her mother’s style of singing Vietnamese poetry. It is like reading a poem with a personal melody that finds itself while being recited. She uses the spontaneity of an improv performance to be the key to open what sets her apart from smooth and soft to intense and loud, a whole spectrum of expression is hoped to be found.

Bobby Levy: Butoh Dancer, composer
with Camille Rowdon: Improvisational Vocals

Butoh is an ever-evolving, formless way of exploring one's body as a medium for expression. It is rooted in the strong teachings of its Japanese founders, Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno, and has graciously been passed down through disciplic succession to Bobby's mentor, Maureen Momo Freehill. Bobby will be performing a Butoh inspired dance, with a focus on presence, spontaneous creation, and a deep appreciation of Japanese and Asian cultures.

Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say
Immigrant Stories Through Oral Histories

The creation of non-fiction writings based on the “oral history” – the story of a family member as it is told and shared from person to person. The process of collecting an oral history will be taught and used with participants. The participants will then write a guided piece about the immigrant experience.

Houston Yurt Club: Local Yurt Enthusiasts

Experience the history of the Yurt in a modern HexaYurt design. They will also have various size yurts set up and in diverse states of construction throughout the day. You can help build one, learn how to build one, or bring your own to the Yurt Village.
