Mei-Ann Chen, conductor
Angelo Xiang Yu, violin

Conductor Mei-Ann Chen returns to HBU for Celebrate Asia!, a special concert featuring music from China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The program opens with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra’s 70th Anniversary Suite, which includes popular melodies from Western classical music interwoven with famous Taiwanese songs. The orchestra continues with a set of variations on “Arirang,” a folk song often called the ‘unofficial national anthem’ of Korea. Yuzo Toyama’s Rhapsody for Orchestra is based on several well-known Japanese folk songs, and a lush orchestration of “Bèo d?t mây trôi” celebrates the music of Vietnam. Hailing from the Inner Mongolia region of Northwest China, violinist Angelo Xiang Yu performs Ravel’s virtuoso showpiece Tzigane and the famous Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto. In a nod to the approaching Lunar New Year festivities, the concert ends with a sing-a-long version of the Chinese song “Gong Xi Gong Xi.”
