This two part workshop, led by Barbara Joyce-Evans will take choreographers and dancers through the use of everyday clothing as costume pieces. Session 1 of ‘Costuming Off the Rack’ will include discussion about inspiration, fabrics, design concepts, needs of choreographer and dancers, makers and stitchers for alterations, and instructions for the creation of an inspiration board. Session 2 will move to a local retailer putting in motion the concepts learned in the first session. Attendees will “shop” and learn how to find and work with manufactured items to create a costume look based on their inspiration boards.

Barbara Joyce-Evans
A theatrical costumer for over 30 years, with strength in technical costuming and construction, Ms. Joyce-Evans has worked in the Houston Arts community since 1995. A Cutter/Draper/ Maker for the Alley Theatre 1995-1997and various HGO productions during these years, she worked for the Houston Ballet from 1997 to 2014. Ms. Joyce-Evans worked with designers such as Holly Hynes, Kandis Cook, Judianna Lynn, Martin Pakledinaz, Jon Morell, Denis Lavoie, Peter Farmer and Desmond Heeley, among others, to create costumes for ballets by Stanton Welch, Ben Stevenson, Dominic Walsh, Christopher Bruce and Trey McIntyre. On the local theatre and dance scene, she has designed in the past for the Dominic Walsh Dance Theatre, WEAVE, Erin Reck for RECKED Productions and recently, Vitacca Dance Project (YAGP competition)2015. She has worked with designer Barry Doss for STAGES Repertory Theatre 2014-2015 season production of MARIE ANTONIETTE and for the Dance Department at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.
