QFest Houston says
Directed by Dito Montiel
Starring Robin Williams, Kathy Baker and Bob Odenkirk
(2014; USA; 88 min.; Color; DCP; Starz/Paladin)

Oscar winner Robin Williams is Nolan, a deeply-closeted married man who has lived his entire life in the shadows. His wife Joy, a once promising academic, has resigned herself to mediocre teaching jobs at the local community college. Their one remaining friend, Winston, an English professor who had one mildly successful novel many years before, breaks up the monotony as an occasional dinner guest, often with a much younger student by his side.

One evening, after Nolan’s unpleasant boss offers him a chance at a promotion with a series of strings attached, Nolan makes a wrong turn into a questionable part of town. Attempting to make a u-turn, Nolan almost hits Leo, a young hustler with a menacing pimp. Finding himself drawn to the troubled young man, Nolan attempts to help Leo get his life together, blissfully unaware that in doing so, he is gradually unravelling everything he has built for himself up to that point.

A moving portrayal of a man who manages to find himself after having given up years before, BOULEVARD also allows for those closest to him to experience their own revelations, resulting in a moving meditation on the sacrifices and compromises people make just to get to the next day, only to realize their dreams were also lost along the way.

Dito Montiel is an author, screenwriter, film director and musician. In 2003, Montiel published his bestselling memoir A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, which in 2006, he would adapt and direct into a motion picture starring Robert Downey Jr., Channing Tatum, and Shia LeBeouf. BOULEVARD is Montiel’s fifth feature film.
