Houston Center for Contemporary Craft says
How do we view things differently through a lens? Have you ever noticed how glass can magnify and distort an image? This month, join HCCC to make glass-lens paperweights inspired by the work of glass artist Charlotte Potter. Choose an image that appeals to you, and cut it down to size, or tear into smaller pieces to make a collage. Bring a photograph from home, printed on regular paper, or find one in the old magazines provided. Using a cotton swab, paint the back of your glass lens gem with a water-soluble adhesive. Lay down your photograph, and paint over it with more adhesive, saturating the paper. This process references the photographic decals used in Charlotte Potter: Glass Armory. Please allow 20 minutes to complete this activity.

During your visit, stroll through our galleries and take one last look at the summer exhibitions. Be sure to stick around for the Summer Exhibitions Closing Reception & Artist Talk by Charlotte Potter, which starts at 3:30 PM.

Note to parents: The activity will take place indoors and is on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. No supplies will be handed out after 2:30 PM. Please be advised that some of the works in Charlotte Potter: Glass Armory contain nudity.

HANDS-ON HOUSTON is a free drop-in event held the first Saturday of every month. Each month, a teaching artist demonstrates a craft related to the current exhibitions. Families and children of all ages are welcome to come any time between 11 AM and 3 PM and participate in a 15-20 minute activity. Materials are provided. This program supports HCCC’s mission to advance education about the process, product and history of craft. More information at http://www.crafthouston.org/learn/education-overview/.
