"Diving into the Wreck" will explore the difficulties and rewards of writing "close to the bone," that is, using personal experience to power your poetry. It will deal with the fears poets face in opening up intimate or painful situations to the scrutiny of the workshop or the evaluation of unknown the reader. It will also suggest ways for poets to achieve enough distance from memories and events to write with command of their craft while still retaining the passion of self exploration and expression.

Finally, it will validate confessional poetry as a literary mode practiced by poets of skill and renown. The primary purpose of this workshop is to free you from pre-conceived prejudices about confessional poetry and allow you to experiment with the form in a non-threatening environment with a workshop leader committed to healing in the wisdom of poetry.
