Yulissa Arescurenaga, the first Zumba® Instructor in America with Down Syndrome, will be flying from California to Texas for Zack Patrol 2016. Yulissa is 24 years old and took her first Zumba® class in 2008. Her dream was to become a certified Zumba® Instructor and she fulfilled this dream in 2012, after several years of practice, hard work and determination. "Zumba for me is very fun and is like a party,” Yulissa stated. “l like to feel the energy from the people around me. I like to dance in front of the people and they smile and follow me.”

She met Beto, the creator of Zumba®, for the first time at the Zumba® convention in 2012. She had the opportunity to demonstrate some of her Zumba® moves for him such as the salsa, merengue and cumbia. Beto was so impressed that he asked her to dance with him during the convention’s theme party with over 7000 in attendance.

Yulissa is truly an inspiration and is paving the way for those with Down Syndrome and other disabilities. She regularly teaches classes in San Francisco, but recently traveled to Alaska to teach at the National Down Syndrome Congress held at Service High School. In addition, she was honored by Beto at this year’s Zumba® convention with the Zumba Instructor (ZIN) Trailblazer Award.

When asked what keeps her occupied in her spare time, Yulissa shared that she collects Barbie Dolls, watches movies, listens to music, organizes her bedroom and shops at the mall.
