One, two, Freddy’s coming for you. Three, four, better lock your door. Five, six, grab a crucifix…

The original NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET is still one hell of a scary ride - forget the later family-friendly child killer of Part 4 and onward. Freddy Kruger is terrifying in the first film: he’s evil, sadistic and unstoppable.

Wes Craven really kills it with this film, which concerns a child killer who himself is killed by the victims' parents, yet manages to come back and haunt a new generation of the town's teens through their dreams. Well I say "haunt." What I really mean is rip apart with gloves that have knives on each finger. The script is tight, the teens are cool, John Saxon is on fire (as only John Saxon can be), and Robert England redefined our thoughts on horribly burned serial killers and how we feel about them because no matter how depraved he is, you can’t help but warm to him… No? Just me then.

Full of grisly inventive kills and with an incredible score from Charles Bernstein, this is one of the quintessential films from the 80s. Just don’t fall asleep during the screening as you may never wake up. (Spencer Hickman, Mondo Label Manager)
