Most careers go through cycles: phases of growth, then consolidation; stages of excitement, then staleness. Everyone who wants to work soulfully—where work is a form of self-expression and a way to make a difference—while also pursuing financial gain faces singular demands in today’s fluid work environment, regardless of whether they are twenty-somethings just starting out, mid-career warriors, or seventy-somethings taking an encore in the workplace. How can we stay grounded without selling our soul? We will explore this question using models, exercises, and useful paths of inquiry informed by Jung’s pioneering psychological thinking on meaning and vocation.
John Schuster is an executive coach and mentor who teaches coaching at the Columbia University Coaching Program and the Hudson Institute of Coaching. He has an MA in literature and completed his second MA through the Saybrook University Jungian Studies program in 2014. John is the author of five books, including The Power of Your Past: The Art of Recalling, Reclaiming, and Recasting and Answering Your Call: A Guide to Living Your Deepest Purpose.
