The State of Black Lives Summit

The lack of accountability in the justice system resulted in protest and riots across the United States. Despite the recent surge in activism, the nation continues to witness senseless acts of violence and injustice against African-Americans in the form of state sponsored violence, and acts of domestic terrorism. There is an undeniable trend of the dehumanization of Black people, yet no one is willing to call them acts of racism. We are past the point of simply being angry. It is time to get angry and organize.

Although protests over the last year resulted in worldwide attention, systematic change has not occurred. We need measurable results in the form of policy change; Black led media, investments in minority businesses, police reform, and countless other avenues. The Houston Black community needs unity in order to push for racial justice.

On February 12th, 2016 through the 13th, Freedom Bound is hosting The State of Black Lives Summit. The State of Black Lives Summit will be a space to start joint community organizing. We are expecting 250 people from the greater Houston area to address community needs, create a list of demands, and delegate tasks for coordinated racial equity projects. We may not have all of the answers individually, but together under one roof we can develop a more precise solution.

The summit will operate on an intersectional framework by creating an open space for conversations regarding the intersections of oppression within the Black community in the form of caucuses. Each caucus will develop strategies to build a sustainable movement and plan an organized effort for greater change. These strategic conversations will include direct action, policy-making, legal defense, media, economic autonomy and cultural change, etc.

The weekend gathering will also provide time for people to convene within the summit to share ideas and plans from the caucuses and to connect with each other. Between caucuses, we will have guest speakers to address the summit and share their experiences. We will also take this opportunity to support black owned businesses and restaurants by offering space to present their business or provide meals services.

We hope that this summit will kick off a highly organized network of people creating change
