What is meaning? When asked this ques-tion, theoretical physicist David Bohm once answered, “It can’t be defined.” How paradoxical: something that is so essential to our understanding of life—something that enables our ability to respond to the world around us—isn’t definable. Yet, said Bohm, it can be discerned. In fact, meaning pervades everything, linking us as human beings to the higher orders and to the intel-ligence of the universe. Meaning, he said, is one of the first principles. In this lecture, we will identify some of the elements of Bohm’s vast explorations in physics and in human consciousness that guided him toward the discernment of meaning.
