What's It?: A Benefit For Girls Rock Camp Houston says
After the unexpected passing of vivacious and driven Houston musician, Alan Huynh, in January of 2016, a group of his close friends and peers decided to put together a benefit in order to raise funds and assist his family in covering the resulting expenses. Their idea was to provide a place to celebrate his life, showcasing some of the city’s talent and diversity, while paying respects to one of its own. Named after a quirk in speech of Alan's, "What’s It" Fest was able to donate $3000 in proceeds to Alan’s family.

This year, the aim is the same. Hosted on two stages at Houston's new The Secret Group, and benefitting Girls Rock Camp Houston, “What’s It?” will serve to feature some of the passion and skill this town breeds, to give back to the community which has played its part in building and sculpting us all.

"Girls Rock Camp Houston is a DIY, grassroots, one-week summer day camp formed in October 2009 to offer girls (ages 8-18 years old) music and art based workshops. Targeted areas include: musical development, self-esteem enhancement, creation of their own music, friendship and community building, and nurturing individual talents within a cooperative atmosphere. Additionally, girls will benefit from physical & artistic activities that complement their music instruction.

Goals for the program include empowerment of girls & women though music and providing the opportunity for all definitions of girls & women to succeed in any music-related venture. Girls of all backgrounds and musical levels are encouraged to apply, since a limited number of scholarships will be provided.

Girls Rock Camp Houston will offer campers a chance to write their own songs in a band setting and perform them during a concert at an actual live music venue at the end of the week long session."
