Young Professionals On The Ground In Damascus says
Freelance journalist and Middle East analyst Barak Barfi has just returned from weeks on the ground in Syria spending a significant amount of time in Damascus. He has reported for many years from both Iraq and Syria, including embedding with Syrian rebels and Kurdish troops fighting ISIS. Barfi will talk about his time in both Syria and Iraq; and what the future might hold for each country and the region.

What has been Russia’s role in the Syrian civil war and will it intensify? If Mosul is to fall to Iraqi and Kurdish troops, then what is the future of ISIS in the region and beyond? What, if any, good options does the US have in Syria and how might a new US administration approach the region? And is the balance of power in the Middle East starting to change?

Barak Barfi is a research fellow with The New America Foundation, and adjunct fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy and a former visiting fellow with The Brookings Institution. Specializing in Arab and Islamic affairs, his articles have appeared in The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, New Republic, Jane's Islamic Affairs Analyst and Project Syndicate. Barfi is also a frequent commentator on CNN, BBC, MSNBC, Fox News and France 24. He has testified before Congress about the threats posed by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. In addition to his time in Egypt, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, Barfi spent six months in Libya during the revolution.
