The best beach hotels in Goa

What is it: Behind an obscure gate on Dolphin Bay in Nerul, this 10-room spot’s what happened when a US-based art collector (Leela Kannakadri Ellis) built Indo-Balinese villas from hand-hewn laterite stone and filled them with her personal collection. Managed by the Holkar royal family (yes, the same ones who run that heritage fort hotel in Maheshwar) Ahilya by the Sea is basically a curated gallery you can sleep in steps away from the beach.

Why we love it: Three villas spread across tree-covered grounds, plus a tower house, each room packed with art and artifacts from around the world. The Sunset Villa’s got antique Burmese puppets, the Sunrise Villa's Barcos room features pieces from East Africa, Greece, and Gujarat. The Grand Trindade Suite comes with three balconies and hand-painted porcelain plates from Marrakech, while the Music Suite is the new kid on the block with a king bed, private garden, and sea views.

The food’s aggressively local. Seafood comes from fishermen in the neighboring village who use traditional sustainable methods. You’ve also got hyper-local Goan thalis. That arancini you're eating, by the way, is championing red amaranth when it's in season. Even the drinks are seasonal: strawberry daiquiris when strawberries are actually available, Kokumpolitan (their Cosmopolitan) made with Goan gin and kokum, and a Goan Sunset featuring locally-brewed premium feni.

What is it: Mandrem's been winning lately amongst North Goa beaches, and Vaayu Kula fits right in. They've kept things deliberately small with a handful of shore-side rooms and suites.

Why we love it: Ocean view rooms literally open onto sand through tropical gardens (yes, really), while loft rooms feature open sleeping lofts hovering over bathrooms. If you’re looking for privacy, the Moonrise Suite is cocooned away from the main guest area. For those who chase sunsets, the Sunset Suite has a wraparound balcony that'll make you ghost your dinner reservations. Inside, it's all soothing textures. Natural wood, soft linens, muted colours that play well with the landscape. 

Amenities: The wellness game is strong here with a dedicated shala for yoga, breathwork, ice baths, and a rotating cast of workshops. The real action happens at Prana Mandrem, their two-level beachside restaurant serving Southeast Asian and Indian coastal food. Feet in sand mandatory.

Time Out tip: Get a surf lesson from their in-house instructor. Order the house-made kombucha. Challenge someone to spike-ball on the beach.

What is it: Five mud bungalows, built using traditional Goan mud-house architecture, sitting 250 metres north of Ashvem Beach. 

Why we love it: The place stays naturally cool, making air conditioning feel like a carbon footprint you don't need. Four bungalows are seaside, while one's got mixed views of the garden and beach. 

Amenities: Each comes with a big verandah, a sneakily hidden plunge pool below, king beds, sofa beds for extras, writing desks, and yoga mats. Bathrooms are spacious enough to actually rinse off beach sand without converting the whole space into a sand pit. 

Time Out tip: Book three nights, minimum. That unlocks the good stuff: daily yoga, in-house massages, breakfast in bed, and complimentary airport transfers.

What is it: The name's not being cute. You cross a wooden bridge over a saltwater creek (otters live there), and boom, you're on a semi-island where marine turtles nest. Five simple stone beach houses in Portuguese-colonial style are scattered across jungle property.

Why we love it: This heritage resort sits on land Angelo Zeferino Sequeira bought in 1886, and not much has changed since then when it comes to the natural beauty of the place. 

Local life is right down the shore, while the food itself is Goan and Portuguese-influenced. Two dozen staff all get mini-bios in your welcome folder. The Gambas pil pil is their highlight, served creekside or in the sand-floored mess tent among colonial antiques. Ideal for those who are here to disconnect and enjoy Goa’s seaside bounty.

Amenities: Three safari tents open straight onto the creek with private wooden jetties. The houses are fitted with everything you need – showers, fans, well-stocked bars, daybeds, hammocks and nothing you don't need (flatscreen TVs can sit this one out). It's time travel without sacrificing air conditioning and hot water.

Time Out tip: Bring offline entertainment. Mobile network is patchy, but that's exactly the point.

What is it: A resort that opened in 2024 as a love letter to the patch of land it used to be: just sand, sea, breeze, and a handful of people who knew of it. Their construction rule number one was to harm zero palm trees.

Why we love it: The rooms are spread across four categories: garden view rooms, sea view rooms that catch the coastal light, sea-front cottages opening directly onto the beach, and beach cottages staring at swaying palms and endless ocean water. At Ashwe 351 (the beachfront restaurant), Chef Sumera and Chef James make Chicken Cafreal Pao Sliders with a straw-potato crunch, Madurai-style tenderloin, Korean japchae, and freshly grilled lobster. Cocktails like The Citrus Rave and Hippy's Kick (curry leaf twist, yes really) capture peak Goa energy.

What is it: Rooms, huts and a beach house on a rocky peninsula where Patnem Beach meets the Arabian Sea.

Why we love it: The tropical gardens create peaceful paths between rooms, showing off traditional Goan architecture and locally crafted furniture. Seating nooks offer pristine views. Beach access is 35 metres away via a charming wooden walkway, close enough to feel the sand's pull, yet far enough to maintain sanctuary status. The real star, though, is Casa Jaali's waterfront restaurant. Head Chef Rajesh Pandi runs a kitchen that masterfully blends coastal charm with culinary sophistication under bamboo ceilings and atmospheric wicker pendant lights. The menu's got a range that rarely fails to surprise. An extensive mezze board and shakshuka sit next to pao bhaji and dosa, prepared with care. Seafood risotto, Asian jackfruit burgers, house-baked breads, and fresh seasonal ingredients cater to varying dietary intolerances. They serve Maverick & Farmer specialty coffee, and a curated cocktail and wine list.

 What is it: An almost 80-year-old Goan home, two stone rooms, three beach cottages, and two beach huts sitting on one of Goa's most environmentally protected beaches. Galgibaga's known as one of the state's last pristine shores and its most thriving turtle nesting site, thanks to serious local conservation efforts.

Why we love it: It’s really well placed. You’ve got: walks on the quiet beach, treks in the nearby Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, and boat rides down the Galgibaga river. For food, go for local tea shops in Maxem for ross omelette, or Deepiksha on the neighbouring Talpona beach for fried sole fish and Goan xacuti. Order (in advance) authentic Japanese cuisine from Ayumi at Endiapan. Goa's absolute best fresh oysters await at Santosh beach shack (and they deliver them fresh on ice to Casa Galgibaga).

Amenities: The main casa is a two-bedroom villa with intricate mosaic bathrooms inspired by the landscape: earth, water, greenery, and Olive Ridley turtles in vibrant colours. Six independent rooms range from stone rooms made using age-old techniques to Indo-Portuguese beach cottages with vintage furniture and simple beach huts for backpackers. The whole appeal is in the beauty of keeping it simple.
