The Gan HaHashmal neighborhood has seen a revival in recent years with the Abraham Hostel holding court over a sprinkling of hot nightlife spots and an eclectic restaurant scene. From udon noodles and tacos to sushi and hummus, the area has it all - and now a charming Italian joint has been added to the mix. With an emphasis on the Puglia region of southern Italy, Aspetta is an intimate trattoria of sorts. Translated from the Italian expression 'Wait for it,' Aspetta is definitely worthy of the wait.

Run by companions in life and in work, Amir Hirosh and Michal Fussman, offer a personalized menu featuring everything from spicy risotto balls stuffed with ground beef and cooked in a rich tomato sauce with mozzarella to traditional Pugliese pizza topped with sardines, anchovies, capers and olives.

Also not-to-be-missed is the Caponata Pugliese, a rich dish of rigatoni, eggplant, squash, onion, garlic and tomatoes - which makes for a comforting winter recipe. Save room for the classic and delicious desserts; crispy cannellonis filled to bursting with mascarpone cream, chocolate and orange liqueur and the pistachio cheesecake drizzled with berries.

Both Amir and Michal have worked in the local restaurant industry for years and fell in love with the Puglia region while travelling. Their desire to bring its authentic flavors and character to Tel Aviv is what prompted them to open a restaurant. Like the small and intimate space, the restaurant and menu are based on simple yet virtuous principles, only using quality raw materials from the sea and land, an abundant wealth of seasonal fruit and vegetables, olive oil, pastas and handmade pastries, herbs, and local cheeses.

Aspetta, 3 Mikveh Israel St, Tel Aviv (03-6012222). Open daily from 19:00-24:00
