We hoped, we crossed our fingers, and we even said a little prayer to ourselves, but unfortunately, after much anticipation and a very active year for Israeli actors, actresses, and directors, Israel has fallen out of the Oscar running this Academy Award season.

Foxtrot, the raw, beautiful and somewhat controversial glimpse into a bereaved family as they mourn the loss of their son (a soldier who died in the line of duty), had rightfully made it onto the 2018 Best Foreign Language Film short list, giving Israel hope for their first Oscar in this category; however, Samuel Maoz's emotive film just missed the nomination despite expectations from both Israel and abroad.

Last year, Gal Gadot stormed through international theaters with her incredibly believable, incredibly bad-ass portrayal of Wonder Woman. While the Oscar rumor mill spun wildly, it seems we'll be "waiting for Gadot" to kill it Amazonian-style in her next superhero movie: Wonder Woman 2, set for release in 2019. In fact, Wonder Woman received zero nominations, despite being the year's highest-earning movie.
