Hanukkah means a whole lot of guilt, er, we mean gelt and indulging in plenty of other treats like sufganiot dripping in all kinds of random, decadent flavors. Then of course, there is the crazy break that kids have from school, but adults don't from work (in Israel, at least). In order to keep you all sane and entertained - here are our picks for awesome, family-friendly activities to head to for the holidays

The opening of the "Exciting Moments in the Zoo" exhibition marks the 25th anniversary of the Biblical Zoo in Jerusalem. The exhibit invites the entire family to  participate in a variety of exciting activities, including a mobile navigation game in the garden paths where visitors can solve puzzles with their personal mobile phones. The navigators are asked to distinguish between predators and herbivores, between tigers, cheetahs and tigers, and to discover how to take care of the almighty elephants and more. There are also performances for the whole family that combine music and theater, performances in nature and animal stories. Additionally, there are meet & greets with the fascinating zoo staff and animal trainers for behind-the-scenes stories, special workshops, guided meal times for the animals, and more.

2. Ofer Sirkin Mall in Petah Tikvah

Ofer Sirkin Mall in Petah Tikva will hold a gigantic party for Hanukkah, including a variety of workshops and games throughout the days of the festival. As part of these events, there will be about 10 shows and workshops that will enrich children's knowledge about the festival of lights. In addition to the performances, there will be a variety of workshops on the subject of the holiday: Hanukkiah design, a design of forest hedgehogs made out of sufganiot, creating sugar dough candles, dreidels, and more.

3. Petah Tikva Museum of Art

The Petach Tikva Museum of Art is hosting a Hanukkah happening for the entire family, inspired by the museum's main exhibition "Last Chance to See", which focuses on trips. During the event, there will be activities like a lantern tour at the historical Rishonim Museum where participants can discover the exhibits in the museum and the stories behind them, in the light of the magical lanterns, and play in a special interactive quiz for Hanukkah. In addition, there will be tours for children at the art exhibition, and the Education Department staff will conduct creative workshops on light and darkness. The humorous show "The Bread Museum" will also appear in a tiny museum that will open at the Museums Quarter.

4. Festi Slime: Israel's largest slime event

This festival will be the first of its kind in Israel with attractions that are purely based on slime challenges, a trend that has become a crazy YouTube phenomenon. This huge slime festival will be full of cutting edge innovations, tips and inventions for five days, December 4-5 and 8-10. The festival will star leading Israeli Youtubers and slime specialists, taking part in fun activities, slime games, training and demonstrations.
Among the activities during Festi Selim:
  • Active slime stage - The complex will have an active stage where all activities will be held: workshops, lotteries, contests and many other surprises. The stage will be screened on a huge cube and screens in the hall, so that participants can view what is happening on stage from anywhere.
  • The Slime Academy - This is the time to learn from the YouTube and Slime masters everything you did not know about slime - all the craziest secrets and the latest innovations.
  • Israel's "Slimemaster" contest - in a live contest on stage at the festival, the cast stars and the audience will choose the best slime creator and crown the 'Slimemaster' who will win a bevy of prizes.
  • A huge slime crystal ball that kids can get into and take selfies.
  • A glow-in-the-dark slime complex. 
  • An edible slime, chocolate-flavored waterfall.

Hanukkah menorahs & lights tour around ancient Jaffa: During the upcoming Hanukkah holiday, the Old Jaffa Development Company will conduct a menorahs & lights tour in ancient Jaffa. The tour will pass between artists' houses, galleries and studios that, for the Holyday, will create and exhibit antique and artistic menorahs illuminated in the dark. The tour will be spiced up with stories about life in ancient Jaffa under the rule of the Greeks and the Hasmonean dynasty period, and will include, among other things, a spectacular view of the many lights surrounding Jaffa.

In addition to these tours, visitors to Old Jaffa can visit the exhibition "The Best of Illustration Week 2018" to be displayed in the open street gallery in the alleys of Old Jaffa. The works will be showcased in boxes of light that will be illuminated in the dark.

The tours will take place on Wednesday and Thursday. December 5-6, at 17:00 and 19:00. Visitors must register in advance at the Old Jaffa site oldjaffa. NIS 30 per participant

The Corinne Mamane Museum of Philistine Culture will hold a target workshop where participants can prepare dreidels and play boards for the dreidels, and there will also be a show called "The Museum Adventure". At the Ashdod Art Museum there will be a "Transparent" activity that includes an active tour of the new exhibition "The Ashdod Project: Portrait of the City" and an inspired workshop in which the participants created an image in layers, working with transparent plexiglass units.

In the "Green Submarine" complex there will be an active submarine tour and an interactive game activity based on five stations from the environmental world. In addition, a workshop will be held in which the participants will prepare a joint work of various objects combining light and shadows, and a personal work in which participants use flashlights and transparencies to create shadows and shapes.

The Nahum Gutman Museum of Art invites families for a guided tour of the menorah exhibition "Hanukiah Li Yesh" and a festive creative workshop. The tour will focus on the reincarnation of the menorah throughout the generations and will tell the story of Hanukkah and its customs. In the workshop, participants create a special stained glass using black crystals, cellophane and fragrant paper, to illuminate the windows of your house. 

Tuesday, December 4 and Wednesday, December 5, 2018, from 11:00 to 13:00. The activity is suitable: for children ages 6-12. Price of workshop: NIS 45 per child / NIS 15 for accompanying adult. Activities are included in the entrance price of the museum.

Design Museum Holon will host two upcoming exhibits."Cyclone", is a design and technology workshop for children and parents (suitable for children ages 7-11). In the scientific workshop, participants can experience the design and creation of a game based on the principle of centrifugal power. Through the creative process, participants will learn about the close connection between the design world and different technologies and will illustrate how the combination between them influences and changes our reality.

There is also a 'Detective Design Tour" in which participants will tour the galleries under the guidance of the museum's guides. Through short missions, participants can discover through Dutch furniture designer, Maarten Baas's works a new look at concepts such as beauty, value, uniqueness and sustainability as well as the hidden history of the objects that surround us.
