Empowering Heroes: The Remarkable Impact of the Zahal Disabled Veterans Organization on the successful lives of its members.

A charismatic, young man, sits in his wheelchair, his shoulders draped with the Israeli flag. The triumph on his face is palpable, and his soulful rendition of Hatikvah echoes in the air - a testament to his personal victory. These moments, rich with symbolism and raw emotion, capture the essence of Israel's enduring spirit and the unwavering courage of its people. These days, the young man is a wheelchair tennis player at the Paralympic Games. His moment of victory is etched into our consciousness, and touches our souls. The lives of Zahal Disabled Veterans are filled with thousands of similar moments. Moments of wins -big and small - accompanied by those of struggles, challenges, and a desire to refuse to let the injury control one’s life. For 74 years, the organization has stood by them on this long and difficult journey - from injury to a fully-functional life. In addition to the physical rehabilitation received by the wounded in its early years, the organization also supports its members through higher education scholarships, grants and loans.

The Zahal Disabled Veterans Fund (ZDVF) Managing an International Network of Partners

The Zahal Disabled Veterans Fund (ZDVF) serves as the fundraising branch of the Zahal Disabled Veterans Organization. The ZDVF raises funds both locally and internationally through a network of overseas friends’ associations and partners. These funds are targeted towards the extensive rehabilitation programs offered at its Beit Halochem Rehabilitation, Sports and Recreation Centers, acquiring essential equipment, and expanding the vast rehabilitation network for the benefit of the members of the Zahal Disabled Veterans Organization (ZDVO). Within this network, a range of activities are offered to veterans, including physiotherapy, sports, occupational therapy, workshops, and cultural events. The ZDVF also extends its support to special projects such as Academic Scholarships, Beit Kay in Nahariya, and 12 Rehabilitation Day Care Clubs established nationwide to cater to severely disabled veterans. The charitable efforts of the ZDVF have inspired donors, who view it as “a shining example to the world of Israel's commitment to caring for those who have paid such a heavy price in defense of the State of Israel.”

Noam Gershony’s Story: Overcoming Obstacles While Helping Others

Noam Gershony overcame his disability and dedicates his time to helping others. "I don't think I'm a role model for imitation or inspiration", he said in an interview with Ynet. "I'm just a guy who had a tragic event and became a Disabled person overnight. I love my life, and truly enjoy it. Especially knowing that my story helps motivate others in a similar situation. " Gershony not only talks, but also fulfills. He met Ilay Hayut - a young man who is 15 years younger than him - shortly after Hayut was injured in training, and was left paralyzed and wheelchair bound. When Hayut woke up from his coma, he asked for Gershony to visit him. The next day, Noam was already at his side and promised him that they would play tennis together in the future. Hayut became Gershony's protégé, and the friendship between the two is a model of mutual empowerment, and of two people who don't let their disability define them.
