Less than three minutes after stepping out of our room on the second floor of NH Collection Palermo Palazzo Sitano, my friend and I were being serenaded by an opera singer on the steps of an ornate chapel. Three minutes after that, we were seated under a canopy in a sun-soaked sandstone piazza, goblets of Aperol gleaming on the table in front of us. A seven-minute morning stroll will take you to the impossibly ornate Quattro Canti, where wildly intricate stone statues (built into the buildings to represent the saints of Sicily) smile down on you, and if you find yourself dancing into the night in one of the city’s lantern-lit laneways, you’ll be back in bed within moments of deciding to call it a night. Such is the gloriously central, gloriously Italian location of this magnificent hotel – but NH Collection Palermo Palazzo Sitano doesn’t get by on location alone. Far from it.
Set inside an 18th-century Baroque palazzo in the thick of the old town, NH Collection Palermo Palazzo Sitano feels perfectly polished without tipping into intimidating luxury. There are grand staircases, wrought-iron balconies and just enough old-world Sicilian drama – but it’s paired with the clean-lined, contemporary feel NH hotels do well. The overall vibe is elegant but relaxed, like the grand, palatial townhouse of your extremely wealthy Italian family friend.
Aside from the ridiculously beautiful, ornately decorated towering ceilings, the rooms lean contemporary rather than historic – which honestly works in their favour after a long day navigating Palermo’s sensory overload. Expect cool parquet floors, neutral tones, oversized beds and sleek bathrooms stocked with plush robes and upscale toiletries.
On the second floor, with balconies opening up onto Via Vittorio Emanuele, our room was wildly spacious and remarkably quiet – a combo that feels borderline miraculous in central Palermo. If you’re super keen to avoid the chances of the city soundtracking your sleep, book a room overlooking the central courtyard.
There is, though the real standout here is breakfast. In the light-flooded dining room, you’ll find a tray of smoothies on arrival, and buffet tables loaded with everything from Sicilian pastries and gorgeous local cheeses to cured meats and a carefully crafted health food station to help you get your vitamin fix before heading out to the markets.
For dinner and drinks, the hotel bar and restaurant offer a convenient option (and an excellent Martini trolley) when you’ve hit your daily limit of cobblestones and chaos. But given the hotel sits in one of Palermo’s best eating neighbourhoods, chances are you’ll spend most evenings bouncing between trattorias and wine bars nearby.
Service here was notably warm. On arrival, you’re offered a glass of Prosecco, and a member of the team will personally annotate a map of the city – highlighting must-try food markets and particularly beautiful buildings worth checking out. In a city that can feel (wonderfully) chaotic, the team at NH Collection Palermo Palazzo Sitano offer a stable, extremely well-informed sanctuary.
Yes – there’s a compact fitness centre onsite, which isn’t a hyper-flashy wellness club setup but certainly does the job for a morning workout.
No – and honestly, that’s pretty common for heritage hotels right in Palermo’s historic centre. If a pool is a dealbreaker during a Sicilian summer, you may want to look elsewhere, but the trade-off is location: you’re staying in the middle of the action rather than out in a resort-style property on the city fringes.
There’s a small wellness area with spa facilities including a sauna and Turkish bath, geared more toward post-sightseeing recovery than full-blown luxury spa days.
This is where the hotel really shines. Sitting on Via Vittorio Emanuele in Palermo’s historic centre, you’re within walking distance of basically everything: La Vucciria market, Piazza Marina, the waterfront, churches dripping in gold mosaics and enough street food to derail all your plans.
The neighbourhood is energetic, slightly chaotic and deeply atmospheric – quintessential Palermo. One minute you’re walking past grand Baroque facades, the next you’re eating arancini from a paper bag on the pavement – the next you’re wrapped in a robe in your king-sized bed, with the fun of the city unfolding outside your heritage-framed window.
In a sentence, it really does give you the perfect balance – for eager travellers, you’re immersed in the city with a luxurious base to escape to each day, with comfy beds, a beyond-brilliant breakfast and that all-important air-con.
