Located just a few kilometres away from Johannesburg Central Business District, the Bothongo Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve is certainly a must-see destination.

The reserve is one of Gauteng’s most sought-after nature reserves.


It is nestled in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and takes less than an hour's drive from Johannesburg Central Business District(CBD) to access.


The nature reserve was established in 1990 with only two white rhinos and a handful of assorted antelopes. To date, there are more than 600 game in the reserve.


A place for the whole family

Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve is a family-friendly destination with enjoyable activities for all ages.


The reserve has multiple play areas with thrilling activities, including slides and swings, so fun for your young one is guaranteed!

Additionally, there is a pool where the whole family can enjoy swimming.

Food options are galore

Come hungry! The reserve has a restaurant and a cafe that sell various food items, from snacks to main meals, as well as fine wines and champagnes. 

You can also enjoy a light meal like fish and chips. 

Meat lovers can enjoy grilling meat over an open flame in the designated braai area while surrounded by nature and engaging with your loved ones.

There is also a picnic spot for those who love to share and enjoy meals in the open air.


Game drive

Take a self-drive journey or a guided tour to experience the wonders of coming into contact with wild creatures.

You will see rhinos, lions, cheetahs, tigers, zebras, roan antelopes, sable antelopes, and many more animals as you drive.

The reserve also has reptiles and birds.

Animal feeding

One of the exciting activities at the reserve is watching the lion, cheetah and African wild dog feeding.

There are specific times for feeding, and visitors can enjoy the unique experience of watching the animals feed.

Another thrilling activity is that visitors are allowed to fee the giraffe. The giraffe feeding occurs at the Neck & Deck Restaurant on the premises.


Wondercave

Discover South Africa’s third-largest cave chamber, the Bothongo wondercave, which was discovered in 1898 while miners were mining for limestone.
