Move over, Cinderella, Johannesburg just found a Fairy Godmother with a much better laugh. This May, James & Ethel Gray Park will be transformed into a choose-your-own-wonder playground for the inaugural Magical Marble Family Fest.

Taking centre stage as the Fairy Godmother of the Explorers is none other than Anele Mdoda. Known for her electric energy on 947, Anele isn't just hosting; she’s stepping into character as the guardian of the festival's magic.

She’ll be joined by her son, Alakhe, who steps in as the official Ambassador to the Explorers to ensure the event hits the mark for the toughest critics: the kids.

A world built for every age

If you experienced the Luxurious Marble Circus, you know the team behind this doesn't do ordinary. This spin-off is a sensorial feast designed to bridge the gap between toddler-friendly fun and cool enough-for-teens activities (finally!)

Here is what to look out for:

  • The Sparkle Braids Zone: Join the braid queen herself, Sho Madjozi, for a session of glitter, plaits, and performance at the main stage.
  • The Carousel of Dreams: A bespoke, double-decker carousel that’s set to be the most Instagrammed spot in the park.
  • Action Stations: From an epic Nerf war zone and TikTok challenges in the Marble Forest to "Tiny Town" for the toddlers.
  • The Pantry Universe: Forget soggy festival chips; the food and refreshment world is inspired by Pantry's gourmet excellence.
  • Adults-Only Refuelling: While the kids explore, parents can head to the Uncaged Carousel or Skytrain bars for a sophisticated breather.

A Mother’s Day moment

Since the festival falls on May 9 and 10, Sunday’s schedule is getting a special Mother’s Day makeover. Expect curated mementoes and meaningful moments built into the day to celebrate the moms in attendance.

Meet the characters

The park will be roamed by a cast of original Joburg-inspired characters. Keep an eye out for Dazzle (the bubbly zebra mascot), Skattie (an ostrich on skates), and Slo Mo (the coolest, story-loving tortoise in the city).
