Every person is born with a gift, and once that gift is discovered, it’s up to the individual how they choose to use it. For James Delaney, a Johannesburg-based painter and printmaker, his talent has become both a global showcase of South African creativity and a vehicle for meaningful charity work.

For over a decade, James’ artwork has been displayed across Johannesburg, adding beauty and character to the city’s public spaces. His work has also travelled internationally, earning recognition in various parts of the world.

Most recently, one of his zebra sculptures was auctioned at the Starfish Gala in New York City. Speaking to Time Out Johannesburg, James reflected on his journey and the impact of his work, both locally and globally.

Despite his international success, James describes himself as a local at heart. He shared that although his work has been showcased in New York for the past 15 years, nothing compares to being on African soil. He praised South Africa for its value, vibrant culture, and “lekker” food, and expressed his love for local experiences, especially going on safari.

James owns his studio at Victoria Yards, and for the past eight years, that is where he has been cooking the magic.

One of his most recognisable works is the zebra installation located near the Gillooly’s highway interchange in Joburg, visible when travelling towards OR Tambo International Airport. The piece, created for the G20 last year, features a family of five zebras alongside 80 birds, designed to appear as though they are flying across a field while the zebras graze peacefully.

The artwork’s global recognition, particularly through its inclusion in the Starfish charity initiative, was especially meaningful to James. He emphasised that his work is not only about showcasing South African art internationally, but also about creating impact through charity and connecting with people.

“I’m involved here in Johannesburg in fixing up parks,” he said. “I’ve donated hundreds of sculptures there and to other public spaces.”

His zebra sculpture was auctioned at a prestigious black-tie gala attended by business leaders, including lawyers and bankers. Interestingly, the event was sponsored by Investec, whose symbol is a zebra—and the company ultimately won the bid. The sculpture now stands at Investec’s head office in Manhattan. All proceeds from the sale went towards charity.

While James prefers not to fully disclose his conceptual process until projects are complete, he shared that his work typically begins with charcoal drawings in his studio. These are then digitised, laser-cut from steel, and produced in a factory. His process also allows his work to be shipped and installed globally.

His partnership with Starfish, an organisation founded by a friend, has grown over the years. Together, they share a mission to support underprivileged communities. For James, giving back is essential.

"I think we all have a responsibility to do more than just what we do in the commercial world. It adds richness to our own lives, and it helps others. So I think it's essential."

James has been creating art since childhood and remains grateful for every milestone along his journey. He believes persistence is key and encourages others not to give up on their passions.

“For me, art is central to how we interpret the world and how we enjoy the spaces around us,” he said. “It brings both private and public spaces to life.”

He has also collaborated with the Jozi My Jozi initiative, designing creatively branded public bins featuring messages of love for the city. Through this project, he has created 100 custom dustbins aimed at inspiring residents to care for and take pride in Johannesburg.

Although born in Cape Town and having spent time in England, James says Johannesburg is home. He appreciates the city’s weather, greenery, and vibrant energy- along with its thriving coffee culture, particularly in Maboneng.

James’ story is a reminder that success is not only about personal gain, but about using one’s gifts to make a meaningful difference in the world.
