Johannesburg just got a new flame to gather around. The Braai Republic, a proudly South African fast-food concept backed by Springbok star Retshegofaditswe "Ox" Nché, has officially opened its first store at Northgate Mall, aiming to transform the country's favourite tradition into a national franchise movement.
According to BusinessTech, the Northgate launch on 20 November marks the beginning of a rollout that aims to take the brand across SA, bringing braai culture into the fast-casual spotlight.
A fast-food braai that actually tastes like a braai
In a market crammed with global chains, The Braai Republic leans into what sets South Africa apart: meat on the bone, flame-grilled over open fire, served with sides that are both convenient and authentic. The menu offers a variety of cuts, including brisket, chuck, beef short rib, pork ribs, T-bone, boerewors, and chicken, paired with traditional favourites like hand-cut slap chips, creamy pap, chakalekker, salads, and shebo, all prepared fresh on site. It's fast food, yes, but it's also familiar, nostalgic, and deeply Joburg.
Ox Nché brings Bok star power to the grill
As reported by IOL (Daily News), Retshegofaditswe "Ox" Nché isn't just the face of the brand; he is a partner involved in menu development, testing new dishes, and long-term strategy. He plans to open his own Braai Republic branch soon and says the concept works because braai culture is one of the few things that unites South Africans across backgrounds and generations. For Nché, the brand represents "that spirit of togetherness", whether it's family around the fire or teammates bonding over a plate of meat.
Built in SA, for SA
Behind the brand is Fiamme Holdings, the team that scaled The Fish & Chip Co. into a nationwide player. MD Jan de Beer told Blazon Magazine the idea began as a casual conversation "after a few drinks", but took over two years of rigorous development to hit a scalable franchise level. The concept is grounded in three things South Africans all understand: fire, bold flavour, and community.
For Joburg foodies, it’s a compelling invitation: ditch the international fare and grab a plate of homegrown comfort. Head to Northgate and taste what happens when steak and cakes meet serious South African enterprise.
