It marks a new era for Thembisa's residents. On Tuesday, the City of Ekurhuleni officially unveiled a newly reconstructed R25 million bridge along Flint Mazibuka Drive, restoring a crucial link between Winnie Mandela Zone 2 and Hospital View.
The bridge, originally built in 2014, collapsed due to flooding from the Kraalspruit River, leaving residents and motorists struggling with limited access between the two areas. Its absence disrupted access to essential services.
Now rebuilt, the bridge is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and ease congestion, particularly for those travelling between residential zones and key facilities.
Speaking at the unveiling, City of Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Hon Nkosindiphile Xhakaza highlighted the bridge's importance, noting that it plays a vital role in connecting residents to healthcare services. Hospital View is located adjacent to Thembisa Hospital, a long-standing, trusted medical facility that has been serving the community since 1972 and treating thousands of patients each year.
Beyond improving mobility, the project also delivered meaningful economic benefits. Xhakaza says approximately R11 million of the total budget was directed towards local service providers, with community members actively involved in the construction process. In addition, six local small and medium enterprises benefited from participating in the project.
Thembisa itself remains one of South Africa's largest and most vibrant townships, located near Kempton Park and Midrand. Home to hundreds of thousands of residents, it is known for its energetic atmosphere, accessible transport, bustling local businesses, and rich cultural scene.
The completion of the bridge not only restores a vital route but also symbolises ongoing development in the area, bringing improved infrastructure, better connectivity, and renewed optimism for the community.
